How to book shows is dependent on a lot of variables. Don't be overbearing, but a well placed "hey, (name). Tell people they had good sets, ask them about their life or if they watched stranger things. But, when you aren't outgoing people will take that as unfriendliness. Even if it isn't, saying something like that isn't helpful and is going to put you in a weird head space. It probably doesn't help that your girlfriend told you people dislike you. But the first advice I'd give you is that you are taking all of this too personally. There are a lot of variables going on in this post. Is this an opinion that is normal in comedy? Or does my scene just have a weird idea of how getting booked should work? I’d understand if I just showed up a month ago and bombed 2 times and wanted to be booked, but I’ve been around awhile, I book my own monthly showcase, I go to other people’s shows, I write for a semi popular local comedy blog, I go to open mics as much as I can and more importantly I get pretty big laughs when I go up, but for some reason the view seems to be, you shouldn’t ask to be booked, you need to go to every open mic and eventually you will be asked, but that’s never worked for me and also seems counter intuitive? Like if you’re not trying at all to take the initiative to try and get booked how can you expect to get booked? They all said that to get booked you need to go to open mics and then wait for someone to ask you, that seeking out getting booked made me seem entitled and Douchey especially because I don’t always consistently come to the open mics (because I work overnights) I received a huge backlash from the community. I’ve attempted to promote myself posting videos of my set asking if anyone had any openings on any shows. ![]() I have featured on 2 shows to 100+ crowds where I did 10 and 15 respectively and crushed, but both of those were shows I asked to be put on, booked by someone outside of my local comedy scene. As an open mic comedian who has been doing stand up on and off for 2 years, I feel like I’ve developed a tight 10 and solid 15 that gets good laughs, but I’ve found it hard to figure out the acceptable way to try and get booked.
